NHC 2022 Christmas Appeal

Christmas is meant to be a very happy and special time for children, and for most children it is. Sadly for children experiencing homelessness, Christmas Day isn’t a day of joy at all.

This is why each year we do our best to make sure no child is forgotten.  This Christmas we are supporting 212 children who are currently experiencing homelessness, or living in crisis accommodation.

We want to give these gorgeous kiddos something to smile about this Christmas. They have already been through so much, and we think they deserve a very special day

So, we’re planning an amazing fun filled Christmas party for 100 kids in Melbourne, and a Christmas gift drive for 112 First Nations kids in the NT.

All of these children have been displaced through homelessness which is often caused by family violence. No child should ever have to experience this, yet so many children do.

We want to make sure no child feels that emptiness and despair on Christmas Day, but we need your help to make this amazing day happen.

We need to raise money for 212 gifts and 212 Christmas lunches!

This is how you can help!

$5 donation buys a child an Advent Calendar to help build the excitement of the festive season.

$10 donation pays for one child’s or parents Christmas lunch.

$25 donation buys a special Christmas gift for a child either here in Melbourne or in the NT.

$?? A donation amount of your choice will help us get a giant Christmas tree big enough to fit 100 presents under it, lights and decorations, children’s entertainment, and any cleaning up costs.

Any funds left will go towards a special gift for each child’s parent.

People often ask if they can donate a gift for a child instead of making a financial contribution. The answer is of course, yes! However this can create issues at our end that might not be obvious.

We don’t yet know the ages and genders of all the children we’re buying for. We prefer gifts to be in a similar price bracket. It’s unfair if one child receives a gift worth $200 while their sibling opens up a $2 gift. No, it shouldn’t be about the money or value of the gift but in reality it often is. Especially with children.

We have also had issues in the past where siblings have received the exact same gift as each other. This isn’t good when that gift is a board game or or a jigsaw puzzle where a spare isn’t necessarily a good thing.

The biggest issue we have with donated gifts though, is that almost everyone wants to buy something for babies and younger children, and for girls.

We find that kids aged 10+ often miss out and for some reason we will get 3 times more gifts for girls than boys. So in the end we have a surplus of girls presents and we still have to purchase a stack of gifts for boys and older children.

This is why financial donations are just easier all round. Plus, financial donations over $2 are tax deductible for you!

However if you would really like to buy a gift, we do appreciate anything and everything and we would absolutely love some gifts for parents! Almost all of them are Mums. We find gifts such as these are popular and well received.

Candles
Summer scarves
Costume jewellery
Coffee/tea mugs
Body spritz
Moisturisers
Platter set

Thank you all so much for helping us make this dream come true.
